Architectural studios Moreau Kusunoki and Frida Escobedo, in collaboration with French studio AIA Life Designers, have presented their final design for the renovation of a landmark in the center of Paris. The Pompidou Center will receive a significant and much-needed renovation over the next five years (its gradual closure will begin in the fall of 2024, with a full closure from 2025, before reopening in 2030).

The changes do not involve the creation of new structures: the recognizable colorful pipes, as well as the steel and glass expanses that have made the Pompidou Center an architectural landmark, will be preserved. The studios will focus their efforts on the main goal of the project - providing visual connections between spaces for different purposes.

“Exploring the meaning and role of the museum in the 21st century is a constant theme in our work. The project is guided by a fundamental approach to architecture - the concept of “middleness,” or mâ in Japanese: when a universal platform creates new semantic and vital connections between diverse spaces,” say Moreau Kusunoki founders Nicholas Moreau and Hiroko Kusunoki.

The Pompidou Center was opened in 1977 according to the design of Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, who imagined it as a “living organism”. The center's new policy seeks to maintain its original experimental beginnings. “Since its creation, the Pompidou Center has strived to be an experimental space, constantly reinventing itself to remain relevant and inspire new ideas. We saw the renovation project as an opportunity to improve all these aspects and, through adaptive renovation, create a museum that strengthens the connection with the city,” continue the architects.

Laurent Le Bon, President of the Pompidou Centre, says: “The interventions of Moreau and Kusunoki, in collaboration with the studio of Frida Escobedo, will be integrated into the visionary architecture of Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers to shape a new narrative. This project is an opportunity to reinvent the original utopia of the Pompidou Center.”
