Febrero Studio: apartment in the style of Brazilian modernism

The Febrero Studio team recreated the atmosphere of Brazilian modernism in a Madrid apartment in the Chamberi district. The owners of the 150-meter apartment, a family with three children, wanted to preserve history, but adapt the space to the requirements of the time.

Before starting work, clients asked to pay attention to a number of important points. On the one hand, there was a need for a reference to the important period of the couple’s life, which they spent in Brazil. On the other hand, they needed a spacious play area for three children, which could later be converted into separate nurseries.

Having demolished additional partitions, the architects discovered that the load-bearing columns were located chaotically, outside the regular structure, which significantly complicated the work on the project. “The solution was wooden modular structures,” says architect and co-founder of Febrero Studio Jesús Díaz Osuna. — They formed the basis of the project. We wanted to organize the space and give the interior more openness. This allowed us to remove all suspended ceilings and use modules to integrate the air conditioning ducts.” The architects were also able to expand the living room through more efficient use of space and install sliding doors that fit into the modular design.

The biggest changes affected the kitchen area. “We wanted to convince clients to choose something monolithic and modern,” the architects add. The kitchen has become the real heart of the house, around which all spaces are built. Red tones and wood helped recreate the atmosphere of Brazil in the middle of the last century. “We said we were going to take a color that we hadn't used before to separate the volume of the island from the rest of the space, emphasizing its volume. Thus, the two key elements in the apartment in which materiality comes to the fore are the wooden modules and the kitchen island.”
