Only cold textures, colorful patterns on all walls, a separate bidet, and other outdated techniques in bathroom design that it’s time to abandon.

A monochrome palette is a common occurrence in minimalism, and this style is firmly entrenched in the list of sustainable trends. But the interior is completely in one color, without any color transitions, different shades, or accent elements, it looks dull and bland.
Which is better
You can use only one color in the palette, but don’t go into monotony, use several of its accents. Gray or beige are best suited for monochrome since both colors have dozens and hundreds of variations. And even in a single-color scheme, add a couple of contrasting or bright details to create visual accents.
2. Only cold textures
Marble and other types of stone are the most popular textures for the bathroom. They look luxurious on walls and floors, as a basis for decoration and as decorative elements. But all these are cold textures that in themselves lack comfort. Therefore, if you use only them in the interior, the bathroom will turn out to be too cool, like an expensive but soulless luxury hotel room.
Which is better
Combine textures that feel different. Marble, onyx, and other types of stone will harmoniously complement wood - even if it is its imitation. Moreover, now it is not difficult to find tiles, quartz vinyl, wood-look porcelain tiles, not to mention furniture. Add soft textiles, wicker, or the same wooden decor to balance the coldness of stone, concrete, or glass.
3. Colorful patterns on the walls
As soon as a variety of tiles appeared on the market, bathrooms were filled with bright patterns: Metlakh, oriental, geometric, and fantasy. For a long time, bright ceramics remained in trend, but too much concentration of such patterns in a limited area quickly becomes boring. And it just looks tasteless.
Which is better
To create a relaxed atmosphere in the bathroom, choose beautiful natural patterns of marble, natural stone, and terrazzo instead of patterns on the tiles. You can use decoration with ornaments, but only in doses - and it should be the only bright element in the interior. For example, you can create a patterned floor in an eclectic bathroom with oriental motifs. Or choose geometry for a bathroom in a modern style.
4. Fabric curtains
The curtain in the bathroom is an attribute of the interiors of the nineties and zeros. This not only looks outdated and makes the interior very cheap, but it is also generally impractical: in conditions of high humidity, mold easily grows on the material and quickly multiplies.
Which is better
To protect the floor and walls from splashes, cover the bathtub with a plastic or, even better, glass screen. Such a partition costs little, is easy to install, and due to its transparency, does not in any way affect the design of the room. However, if you wish, you can make the screen part of the interior: for example, by choosing contrasting fittings or a matte or embossed surface.
5. Small mosaic
10-15 years ago, apartment owners and designers actively experimented with decoration, in particular with mosaics. They selected fragments of different colors and formed them into large-scale panels, realistic paintings, or simply intricate patterns. All this is now an unconditional anti-trend, which immediately reveals an outdated interior.
Which is better
To decorate the walls, use tiles or porcelain tiles of medium and large format. The latter is suitable even for small bathrooms since it does not stand out with contrasting seams and does not split the surface into separate fragments. If you like mosaics, choose modern, laconic options: one (non-flashy!) shade, matte or semi-matte, without gilding or other decor.
6. Standard shower cabin
Previously, in every second bathroom, you could see a solid shower stall with voluminous plastic parts, in the form of a capsule, etc. But all these are standardized solutions that are not suitable for every bathroom, and the design with an abundance of plastic and chrome does not meet modern trends.
Which is better
Design your shower area to fit your bathroom. This can be done either with the help of a designer or craftsmen, or independently. In addition, such designs look more laconic, and visually lighter, and do not disrupt the overall style with a design that goes out of almost any direction.
7. Separate bidet
At the end of the 2000s, bidets in the bathroom turned from an element of unattainable luxury, which could only be seen in foreign films or TV series, into quite affordable plumbing fixtures. So they began to appear in all bathrooms where there was enough space. But now there are more functional solutions, and an additional plumbing fixture only takes up space and complicates cleaning.
Which is better
In most cases, you can safely refuse a bidet. But if you need its functionality, it is better to choose a modern toilet model with this mode or install a hygienic shower - it takes up less space and is even more convenient to use.
8. One tile on all walls
Choosing one material and decorating all four walls in the bathroom with it seems like a practical solution, but such a finish has not looked relevant for a long time. Identical surfaces evoke boredom; there is nothing for the eye to catch on. And if the tile has a pattern, then in such quantity even the most beautiful pattern will begin to tire.
Which is better
Even in a tiny bathroom, you can combine two materials: for example, plain tiles and washable paint in a neutral shade. Sometimes wallpaper not in the wet area, wall panels, or decorative plaster are added to this set. This makes the bathroom interior look more interesting, and at the same time, you get a visually lightweight zoning tool that does not overload the space.
