Kengo Kuma's Japanese Faucet Design: Trends for 2024/2025

Kengo Kuma

Japanese architect Kengo Kuma has designed a minimalist collection of faucets for the Italian brand of premium sanitary ware and bathroom accessories Gessi. The Incastri series is inspired by the traditional Japanese chidori.

Chidori (translated from Japanese as “thousand birds”) is an ancient toy made of wooden elements with grooves that can be used to assemble spatial compositions. Interestingly, this construction set inspired Kuma to build a pavilion in Milan back in 2007. Another source of inspiration for this Kengo Kuma Japanese faucet design is the Chōzu tradition. This is a ritual of washing hands with water that the Japanese practice before entering sacred places – it is a metaphor for the act of purification.

The elements of the Incastri mixers form a laconic design: when viewed from the front, it looks like a vertical straight strip with a rhythmic relief at the top. Like many products from the Gessi catalogues, the new mixers ensure economical water consumption.
