Luke Edward Hall: Peruvian Restaurant Amaru in St. Moritz

Amaru St. Moritz

Luke Edward Hall designed the Peruvian restaurant Amaru in the iconic Kulm Hotel in St. Moritz. This project is the perfect embodiment of the designer's style: eclectic, romantic, and theatrical. In addition to working on the interior, Luke Edward Hall created 24 wall art pieces, complemented by paintings by Peruvian artist Ernesto Gutierrez. “You can’t immediately tell from the design whether it’s Peruvian or Swiss, which I really like,” says the designer.

The designer delicately combined the Swiss Alps and Peru: “I wanted to hint at Peru and St. Moritz, but leave it feeling like a nice, cozy space.” The space, with its vaulted ceiling, white walls, impressive fireplace and mountain views, was a blank canvas for Luke Edward Hall's vision. The honey-colored vaulted ceiling is highlighted by a fresco depicting the enormous wildflowers found in Switzerland's Engadin region. It was created by London-based artist Timna Woolard. Next to the restored fireplace there is a bar where the strong Peruvian drink pisco is served.

Restaurant Amaru is adjacent to the Kulm Hotel with stunning views of the Alps. In winter, guests come to admire the snow-capped peaks and enjoy the ski slopes. In summer, you can enjoy views of alpine meadows and lake waters sparkling in the sun. “I stayed here once,” says Luke. — It was in 2019, and I just fell in love with it. I love old grand hotels with amazing history, and in this hotel history is just everywhere.”

The hotel's history dates back to 1856, and its founder Johannes Badrutt is considered one of the first to introduce St. Moritz to the world as a winter holiday destination. In 1993, Italian interior designer Lorenzo Mongiardino was hired to redesign the reception and lobby area. “There is a sense of theatricality here, but at the same time everything is very welcoming. This is a place where you want to linger. I'm a big fan of Mongiardino - I love that he was more of a decorator than an interior designer, a master of special effects and visual tricks,” says Luke Edward Hall.
