Shanghai-based ZJJZ Architecture Practice has completed a wooden Mushroom House in Jiangxi, China. The structure, called “Mushroom,” stands in a pine forest and marks a vibrant relationship between nature and architecture.
The house, with an area of only 50 square meters, consists of two simple volumes. The main part is used for a guest room with a panoramic window installed at viewing height. Sitting or leaning on the bed, guests immerse themselves in the surrounding nature. The bedroom is connected to the children's area by a small staircase. The snow-white conical roof is rounded and creates a feeling of unlimited expansion of space.
The bathroom and storage room are located in a simple rectangular volume that is inserted into the main part of the “mushroom”. Next to the bathroom, a horizontal window is designed to block the view from the walkway to provide privacy while still allowing nature into the space. A circular skylight creates different reflections of light and shadow depending on the time and weather. This poetic space also serves as the entrance hall of the house, where guests enter.
The house sits on a steel structure to minimize the impact on the site. Over time, green plants on the ground will gradually grow to cover the building. The conical roof is covered with tiles, and the rest of the house is covered with granolite. The material changes color depending on humidity and time, allowing the building to blend in with the natural environment.
