"Grammatology. Part One" at the Podgorny Gallery in Saint-Paul-de-Vence is an exhibition by the French interdisciplinary designer Ora-Ïto, dedicated to the grammar of his three-dimensional language. The exhibition extends beyond the exhibition complex: wall sculptures are presented in the historic building "Lavoir" ("Washbasin") at the entrance to the village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, near the Colombe d'Or. After the exhibition, Ora-Ïto will continue her artistic explorations with the series "Grammatology. Part Two", and from July 18 to August 24, she will present new works at the Kolektiv 313 gallery in Marseille, in the heart of the Cité Radieuse.
Ora-Ito's works consist of elementary geometric forms: lines, circles, squares, and rectangles. Made from black or colored aluminum plates fixed to a white composite base, they expand the creative vocabulary of the artist and designer, piece by piece. The geometricity and bright monochrome of the exhibits reveal two facets of Ora-Ito's visual universe - adherence to the principles of modernism and the desire to go beyond the established framework and create something new and unexpected.
Strict forms, laconic curves and clear lines that serve no function challenge the modernist principle of “form follows function” and recall the silhouettes of digital interfaces. With this series, Ora-Ito teaches the viewer the alphabet of his own language, which he has been using in industrial design and architecture for 25 years. Exploring the development of a new aesthetic in the 21st century and directly participating in its formation, he describes the modern era, where the line between the physical and digital worlds is constantly shifting and transforming. “Grammatology” is a kind of manifesto for a new era in which the boundaries between design, architecture and art are erased, giving way to limitless creativity in which every shape, every color and every line tells its own story.
The second part of the exhibition will be held by Podgorny Gallery in Marseille in collaboration with Kolektiv 313 Gallery, located in the legendary Marseille "Unité d'habitation" designed by Le Corbusier. The series of works is adjusted according to the Modulor scale measurements inherent in the unique architecture of the building. The result is complemented by the bright pure colors used by Le Corbusier on the walls of the balconies of the iconic high-rise. "Grammatologie. Part Two" combines formal expression, reflections on the principles of modernist architecture and a profound study of language and signs.
