Clothing brand Stüssy has unveiled its second collection of boucherouite rugs, using its own recycled T-shirts and wool from Atlas Mountain. The project was a collaboration with the Artisan Project, a collective led by Palestinian-American textile designer Nina Mohammad.
The project took place within the home space of the Ain Leuh women's cooperative in Morocco, which has existed since 1977. The women weave carpets using traditional methods and technologies, such as hand-stitching sections of the fabric instead of using machines.
The artisans drew inspiration from arts and crafts, vintage graphics and natural forms. From a distance, these recycled rugs resemble rosebuds with folded petals. Despite the use of natural materials (such as wool from the Atlas Mountains) and dyes, they are interested in exclusively modern forms. Sometimes, checkerboard patterns or abstract designs appear.
The cooperative employs about 20 weavers, and for many, these hand-woven rugs are the main source of income for their families. The weavers operate both the hand-held vertical looms used to weave the rugs and the horizontal ones used to create textiles such as blankets.
