The World's First Audio Museum: Kengo Kuma's Project in Seoul

The Audeum audio museum has opened in Seoul. Founded by Michael Chang, the brainchild of the Korean audio brand Silbatone Acoustics, the museum has become the first public institution in the world to focus on sound reproduction equipment.

Michael Chang turned to Japanese architect Kengo Kuma to help him create not just a museum, but a true temple of sound. The architect is known for his love of organic forms, which is important for the concept of the new space.

The building’s distinctive façade is reminiscent of a multitude of tightly stacked organ pipes – and at the same time refers to the relief of rock formations. The first exhibition to be held in the new space is called Jung Eum: In Search of Sound and is dedicated to the audio systems of the last century that marked the beginning of the evolution of the modern era of sound reproduction.

“With a strong focus on preservation and research, Audeum aims to expand and redefine the traditional listening experience by connecting historical sound reproduction technology with the wider world of art,” the museum says.
