Trends 2024/2025: Biodiversity in the installation by Fernando Laposse

Fernando Laposse

Mexican designer Fernando Laposse continues to talk about the interaction between nature and man in his installation for Perrier-Jouët. The show “The Pollination Dance” is about grape vines, the diversity of the insect world, and ecosystems that are affected by man.

In addition to creating art, Laposse works with farmers in southeastern Mexico, developing new materials and production systems that benefit local communities and reduce carbon emissions. His distinctive design vision was shaped by his studies at Central Saint Martins, and museums from the Milan Triennale to the Cooper-Hewitt to the V&A have since exhibited his work. He came up with the idea for his collaboration with Perrier-Jouët after a walk through the fields at Maison Perrier-Jouët’s headquarters in Epernay, in the Champagne region of France.

“The fields in this region have recently been converted to a permaculture system. This means planting wildflowers and wild plants among the vineyards. This was the norm about 100 years ago, but in the 20th century, it was decided to get rid of all this. The repopulation of the surrounding ecosystem with numerous species of native flora has contributed to an explosion of insect populations, an essential element of natural pollination,” explains Laposse.

It was the idea of natural pollination that inspired the designer to create the composition. It is made up of climbing vines interspersed with delicate flowers reminiscent of frosted glass. The space is surrounded by covers of fluttering organza silk in pastel shades, decorated with insects created by Laposse's imagination.

The installation is the latest in a series of Perrier-Jouët artistic collaborations at Design Miami, with previous years also seeing striking projects by Bethan Laura Wood, Glithero, and Analogia Project, all exploring the intersection of art and nature, both important elements of the brand.
