Wabi-sabi Philosophy in the Interior of an Island Hotel

Updated: Nov 20

The young volcanic island of Weizhou in Guangxi is called the most beautiful place in China due to its seascapes, which are combined with a healing climate. It was thanks to them that they decided to build the Puinn hotel here, the founders wanted to make the design conducive to peace of mind and relaxation from the bustle of the city. The team of the Fun's Creative Design Consultant studio was invited to bring this idea to life. The designers used the image of an oasis as the main reference: this is how living plants and warm sandy shades appeared in the project.

The key material of the interior is natural red marble, reminiscent of the lava that gave birth to the island. In the entrance area, it appears in a large reception desk made from a single piece of stone. The natural unevenness along the edges of this volume refers to natural erosion and traces of underwater volcanic eruptions. The central public area unites the atrium and part of the basement: daylight seeps in here through the skylight and brings a meditative character to the project. The relaxed atmosphere here is created by freely arranged furniture, tropical greenery and the intermittent rhythm of graphic lines. Laconic decoration in light tones acts as a background for mid-century modern items with black and brown leather upholstery. The living rooms were filled in accordance with the principles of the wabi-sabi philosophy, which supports the idea of limited consumption and sustainability. The almost monochrome palette of the design is aimed at clients who are ready to give up the usual understanding of luxury in favor of simplicity and quality during their vacation. The accents in the private rooms are local artists' works. However, the center of attraction of the entire hotel is the pool hidden in the basement. The relief ceiling with steep curves was inspired by images of underground hot springs and brutal rock surfaces.
