Owners of small apartments know how difficult it is to find space for a large closet in a room. But it is possible - you just need to be creative sometimes. We show you how to fit a large storage system into a limited space.
Combine with kitchen cabinets
An excellent solution for a studio apartment is to save space by combining two storage systems. In this case - a cabinet in the hallway and a kitchen cabinet. Large appliances can be built into the part that goes into the room ( here it’s an oven and a refrigerator), and the cooking area can be made compact and placed opposite.
Make a display case by the window
The side space next to the window or balcony block can be occupied by a tall but shallow cabinet with transparent glass doors. This storage system is suitable for a living room or office, as it is more convenient to store books, dishes, or hobby items than clothes. The glass showcase will visually echo the windows and balcony. The result is a light composition that does not overload the interior of a small room.
Place around the bed
In a small bedroom, there is often no space to fit a full-sized wardrobe on the side or opposite the bed. In this case, it makes sense to use the space around it: on both sides and above. The result is a storage system with side cabinets and additional top drawers. If there are still not enough sections, you can hang them above the headboard or on the wall opposite the shelf.
Or around the door
A U-shaped wardrobe with mezzanines can be placed not only around the bed: it will fit well into the space above the interior door. This solution can be implemented in any room, including the hallway. The main thing is that the width of the room allows you to place at least narrow cabinets on the sides of the doorway.
Combine with workplace
If you want to put a wall in the room, large furniture can be made more functional and at the same time visually light. To do this, first, add open sections. Secondly, complement the storage system with a functional area: for example, a place to work or study. To do this, provide a niche with a small table, and around it organize a rack with shelves or closed drawers. If you make a custom cabinet, the work area can be immediately included in the design.
“Frame” the TV zone
Another solution for a living room or mini-studio is to enclose the TV area in a “frame” of cabinets. To do this, you can make a custom-made one-piece storage system or simply place two tall narrow pencil cases on the sides of the TV, and a cabinet or chest of drawers below. The elements can even be different colors, as in this project. It will be an interesting contrast.
Combine the hallway and living room
Nowadays, layouts with an open entrance area are popular - when the hallway is not separated from the room by a partition. This can be used to fit a closet into a small space and at the same time visually unite the zones. For example, install a pencil case between the hallway and the living room, as in this project. And for greater functionality, make shelves on the side of the living room for storing small items. This way you can intelligently use all the wall space.
Select transformer
Transformable furniture allows you to combine several functions in one piece, which is why it is often used in small apartments. So, for example, in the living room-bedroom (or children's room) you can put a closet in which the bed is “hidden”. And it’s easy to change the functionality of the room depending on the time of day. At the same time, the space used is two times less than for the storage system and sleeping place separately.
Combine several zones
Another working trick for small rooms is to combine several zones using a storage system. For example, in this children's room, they made a group consisting of a bed, a reading corner and a work desk. They are all framed by a cabinet with fronts to match the wall decoration; the bed and bench are integrated into the furniture design. They were highlighted with an accent color of lilac. As a result, the large closet did not require a separate place; it formed a single space with the rest of the items in the room.
Built into the wall
A built-in wardrobe in a small room helps to visually expand the space due to the fact that it does not protrude, but “sinks” into the wall. You can build a niche for it or erect a partition between rooms of a suitable configuration, as was done in this project. And some plans from the developer already include space for a built-in wardrobe. All you have to do is choose the design of the doors: you can make them solid to match the finish, mirrored, louvered, etc.
